Similar to the fight between your titular figures in Batman v Superman, the title of the piece is misleading – although a typical misconception.

Without offering any movie spoilers, things i can tell is the fact that despite perceptions that Office 365 Groups and Teams are opposing solutions, in fact they’re really complementary. Actually, both of these have to interact as ever to defeat the evils of emails and boring file shares.

When Microsoft Teams premiered into Public Preview in November 2016 there is lots of confusion because this Slack competitor appeared to leave nowhere. One factor was obvious though – Teams sits inside the Office 365 Groups substrate.

Today, rather of pitting Office 365 Groups versus Teams, I will do my favorite that will help you untwist the merchandise names and know how we’ve got the technology really coexists inside your tenant.

Dictionary.com defines an organization as (noun) “any collection or assemblage of persons or things.” Ok great, is sensible. Which Groups are made around Office 365 technologies so let’s give them a call Office 365 Groups.

But another definition is:

So an organization could be someone. Let’s see where it goes with Teams.

Dictionary.com defines a group as (noun) “a quantity of persons developing among the sides inside a game or contest”. Ok, we’re not playing a game title or contest so let’s consider the next definition: “a quantity of persons connected in certain joint action”.

First got it, but why do known as “Microsoft Teams” when it’s only accessible as part of Office 365? Using the same logic above with Groups shouldn’t it’s known as “Office 365 Teams”?

From the user perspective, while “group” and “team” have different meanings, the intent seems is the same factor. Or perhaps is “Groups” much more about several technologies, whereas “Teams” is much more in regards to a group of people?

I do not know for several. But semantics and meanings aside, what we should do finish track of is a few key scenarios that should be understood.

Use Situation 1: Come with an existing Group and wish to produce a new Team

If several users has already been using Office 365 Groups, then they have:

  • Exchange mailbox and calendar
  • File storage (operated by SharePoint)
  • OneNote notebook
  • Planner (only one)

Your house Bob wants to produce a Microsoft Team. Bob can easily make one and fasten it for an existing Office 365 Group.

However, the combination between your new Team and also the existing Group has some gotchas:

  • Teams don’t show existing file storage in the Group unless of course you set a SharePoint tab, that is confusing and adds extra tabs as you have one for Files.
  • Teams don’t display the present Groups’ OneNote content, just the sections which were produced for every funnel
  • The present Planner already within the Group isn’t accessible whatsoever in the Teams interface
  • New Planner tasks produced in separate channels inside the Team don’t appear in Groups or Planner

Use Situation 2: Produce a Team without connecting it for an existing Group

What goes on if a person results in a new Team but doesn’t hook it up for an existing Group? This could very easily happen as Teams are invite-only, and in contrast to Yammer groups, you cannot browse the other Teams might already exist. For instance, Bob is part of the “Sales” Group, but Sally isn’t part of that Group. Being unsure of the Group exists, Sally is out and helps to create a “Sales” Team. But simply like a workplace 365 Group is created when a user results in a Yammer group, each new Team also will get a workplace 365 Group.

What this means is Sally has unintentionally produced a brand new “Sales” Group that serves an identical purpose, and sure includes a similar name towards the “Sales” Group Bob had been in.
